WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE STARTING A BRAND OR BUISNESS IN NIGERIA

you absolutely need to know these tips before you start a brand or business in Nigeria, if you want to be ahead of the majority there are tons of tips online on what to do before starting your business or brand. from legal advice, management tips, to structuring and writing your business plan. all of these are great, but we are not trying to create a generic business start up article we want to take a look at the aspects that you must come to terms with before starting a business in Nigeria, online or offline. these tips will apply in any part of the world, they’re not just applicable to Nigeria. Now the chances are you are reading this because you’re either running a brand/business or just about too start which, I must confess, is really not that easy or “fancy” (like most entrepreneur’s make it seem), but definitely worth it. here are some tips to know before starting a brand or business in Nigeria; First up, when you’ve decided you want to build a brand because of the ostentatious life you’ve seen your entrepreneur-peers living I must emphasize that: 1. it is absolutely NOT for everyone 2. if you’ve decided entreprneurship is for, you must solely do it for the passion, nothing more, nothing less. pick an aspect you are most passionate about, not something you think will give you easy money WHY FOR THE PASSION? because that passion lives inside you & will sustain you when the going gets tough & the money stops flowing. Note: There is no entrepreneurial journey that doesn’t meet some type of rough patch during growth, at least, so be prepared. Okay, chill out, I’m not here to scare you! Secondly, when picking a name for your brand business make sure its a Timeless-Name, I mean that kind of brand name that makes people ask for the inspiration behind your brand/business Name. that already makes for a good conversation starter and a great first pitch. now we’ve got our passion in-check and a good brand name to follow, what’s next ? I’ll advice at this point to get the company registered but this can be ignored, especially if your starting with zero capital but please soon as you start earning under the brand name, make sure you do this (A lot of Nigerian’s tend to ignore this) especially if you plan to grow the brand. At some point,, it just needs to be done. All that legal stuff is important but you can get away with not setting it up at first especially in Nigeria. You also have to identify which social channels will best suit your new business, Instagram for more visual content Twitter for more Written content; Facebook for both visual & written content, Printrest, Snapchat, Tumblr; and the list goes on, just depends on the characteristic’s of your new business. granted, these tips are moving towards a more online inclined business which isn’t as popular as the more predominant physical business structure in Nigeria but never limit your business, the world is a global village, give your business as much visibility as you can. with the right social channels now identified for your business, what comes next is brand Logo which should be done professionally by a graphic expert Try and get the best you possibly can ( and not your friend, who you think can maybe give it a try). Now Lastly, whether it’s a service, clothing, food, art, travel or whatever kind of business you are about to start, or just started, you need to have a website, and by a site I mean an e-commerce website, ending with .COM, not a free site like what one of WordPress’es offers this site should be accompanied with a Mail, again, not Yahoo or Gmail. (a professional email with your company name attached, e.g., [email protected]) WHY DO YOU NEED A SITE? its simple, gives you a professional outlook, helps you stand out from competitors, easily gain consumers trust, helps introduce potential consumers to the range of services your business offers. it is more beneficial to your business than you can ever imagine I mean, imagine if we didn’t have this blog we wouldn’t have been able to pass this info easily, get it? so to sum it all up, what you need to know before starting a brand or business in Nigeria to stand out is; Note: an Instagram, Twitter, or Snapchat account is not just enough for your business, especially if you really want to be taken seriously, you just need that website. THE EVOLUTION OF NIGERIAN MUSIC: FROM FELA TO AFRO-BEATS

Nigerian music, wildly referred to as “Afro Beats,” has seen a meteoric rise over the years. Often lumped under the generic label of “African music” by the uninitiated, Nigeria’s musical landscape, particularly its Afrobeats scene, stands out as a shining star in the constellation of global music genres. But let’s set the record straight from the outset: it’s not just “Afrobeat,” it’s “Afrobeats.” Yes, that extra ‘s’ makes all the difference. While the distinction might seem subtle, it speaks volumes about the diversity and dynamism of Nigerian musical heritage. From the legendary sounds of juju and highlife to the contemporary fusion with Western influences, Afrobeats encapsulates a kaleidoscope of musical styles and traditions. But don’t confuse it with “Afrobeat” (without the’s’), a genre pioneered by the iconic Fela Anikulapo Kuti in the 1960s and 1970s. In this blog post, we’ll delve deep into the evolution of Nigerian music, tracing its roots from Afrobeat legends to the modern icons shaping its current landscape. INTRODUCTION TO THE ROOTS OF AFROBEAT WITH ICONS LIKE FELA KUTI Afrobeat is more than just a genre; it’s a pulsating rhythm that echoes through the heart of Nigeria’s musical history. and at the forefront of this musical revolution stands the legendary Fela Kuti. You can’t dive into the roots of Afrobeat without tripping over Fela’s name. Alongside his longtime partner, the rhythmic maestro Tony Allen, Fela laid the foundation for what would blossom into the vibrant Afrobeat sound we know today. With a fusion of traditional Yoruba and Igbo melodies, laced with the vivacious energy of highlife, and sprinkled with the infectious groove of American funk, jazz, and soul, Afro-beat is a musical gumbo that’s as rich and flavorful as the Nigerian jollof rice. And at its core are the chanted vocals, the intricate web of rhythms, and the hypnotic percussion that beckons you to dance until dawn. Fela wasn’t just a musician; he was the king of Afrobeat, leaving behind a legacy that reverberates through the veins of Nigerian music. But the story doesn’t end there. His bloodline pulses with musical genius, with Femi Kuti and Seun Kuti carrying the torch forward, ensuring that Fela’s spirit lives on. TRANSITION TO CONTEMPORARY AFROBEATS AND IT’S GLOBAL INFLUENCE As contemporary Afrobeats emerged onto the global stage in the 21st century, it faced initial hurdles in captivating audiences beyond its Nigerian roots. The rich mixture of polyrhythms, vibrant horns, call-and-response vocals, and expansive compositions inherited from its Afrobeat predecessor, championed by the legendary Fela Kuti, presented a formidable challenge for international listeners. Moreover, in an era devoid of the internet’s omnipresence, spreading this distinct sound was even more daunting. However, a seismic shift began when visionaries like Tuface Idibia, P-Square, Timaya, MI Agbaga, and Don Jazzy infused Afrobeats with Western influences, particularly hip-hop and pop. This fusion, encapsulated under the Afrobeats umbrella, served as a bridge for Western ears, gradually opening them to the infectious rhythms and melodies of Nigerian music. Another pivotal catalyst in Afrobeats’ globalization was the rise of viral dance moves accompanying its infectious tunes. Moves like azonto, alanta, etighi, and later, skelewu, not only drew inspiration from traditional Nigerian dances but also incorporated contemporary elements. These dances found fertile ground for popularity in the UK-Nigeria cultural exchange scene, with figures like Fuse ODG propelling their spread. Yet, the true explosion awaited the arrival of Afro-fusion artists such as Wizkid, Burna Boy, Davido, and Tiwa Savage. With their magnetic stage presence and innovative sounds, they propelled Afrobeats to unprecedented heights. International collaborations and tireless efforts further solidified its presence on the global stage, with artists like Drake playing a pivotal role in its globalization. As a result, the door swung wide open for the next generation of artists, poised to elevate Afrobeats to even greater heights. This journey from Fela’s Afrobeat to contemporary Afrobeats represents not just a musical evolution, but a cultural phenomenon embraced worldwide. SPOTLIGHT ON EMERGING ARTISTS SHAPING THE NIGERIAN MUISC SCENE In the spotlight of the Nigerian music scene, emerging artists have risen to prominence adding layers to the rich mix of sounds originating from the country. Since the globalization of Afrobeats in the 2010s, Davido and Wizkid have stood as formidable figures, each leaving an indelible mark on the global music landscape. Wizkid, making history as the first Nigerian artist to top the charts worldwide with “One Dance,” by drake and Davido, etching his name in Billboard history with the longest-charting Nigerian pop song have paved the way for others to follow suit. Alongside Burna Boy, they form the triumvirate that defines Nigerian music’s contemporary narrative. However, as the scene evolves, a new generation of artists has emerged, bringing fresh perspectives and pushing boundaries. Tems, Rema, and Asake, dubbed the new big three by Native magazine, showcase the diverse spectrum of Nigerian music with their distinct styles. Their rise signifies a shift towards innovation and experimentation, propelling Nigerian music onto global platforms like never before. Moreover, the emergence of talents such as Ayra Star, Ckay, Fireboy, and Omah Lay further reinforces Nigeria’s dominance in the global music arena. Their collaborations with international stars underscore the growing appeal of Afrobeats on a global scale. The recognition of Nigerian music by prestigious institutions like the Grammys, with the introduction of a dedicated African music category, speaks volumes about its influence and reach. While the inaugural set of nominees predominantly hailed from Nigeria, the breakthrough of South African sensation Tyla underscores the continent’s collective musical prowess. In recent times, Nigerian music has transcended boundaries, gracing esteemed platforms such as the Ballon d’Or, the NBA halftime show, Coachella, and the Brit Awards. These milestones signify not just the evolution but the elevation of Nigerian music onto the world stage setting the scene for a promising future fueled by innovation and creativity.

REMA SLAMS DREAMVILLE’S AFROBEAT’S RECPTION “IT’S TOO MESSED UP” HE SAYS

Rema slams Dream Ville’s Afrobeat’s reception and says, “This is too messed up, I’m representing Africa, This is too messed up.” The annual event put together by Dream Ville Records, (a record label founded by the recording artist, rapper, singer and song writer J-Cole) held at Dorothea Dix Park in Raleigh, North Carolina. The 2-day event featured headline performances from SZA, Chris Brown, J. Cole, and Niki Minaj for it’s 2024 edition. it also saw performances from some of Africa’s finest, Amaaree and Rema. Rema’s performance made headlines at the event, but not for his stellar rendition of his hot single “Soundgasm” (see below) during the later part of his performance, Rema struggled with the sound issues on stage until the artist couldn’t take it anymore. to the surprise of everyone watching he voices out and expresses his dissatisfaction. “There’s too many sound issues, it’s messing up my whole performance. I’m seriously not feeling this sh#t the sound cannot be perfect for every other artist but then Africa is in the house and you’re messing sh#t up? he then proceeds to try finish his performance, but to his dismay and that of the fans the sounds goes completely off and Rema’s mic stops working, and he proceeds to exist the stage. (see below) Rema’s public rebuke was not the only viral headline from the Dream Ville fest however, as the Man-of-the Hour artist J-Cole (who has recently been roped into a hip-pop feud between himself, drake and Kendrick Lamar. after the later took shots at both J-Cole and Drake on his verse on the hit single “Like That” with Future.) released a spontaneous body of work that contained diss tracks replying to Kendrick Lamar. titled “Might delete later’ J.Cole openly apologized to releasing the diss tracks and feels the need to take it down from all streaming platforms. This apology came as a huge shock to many, as a lot of people did not really see this coming. they “expected blood” as Nigerian’s would say, and commentary on social media has been very interesting regarding this topic. mostly humorous, but it’s just quite interesting to see societies expectations and pressure on public figures at play on such a grand scheme. (see the apology below) What do you think about how Rema slams Dream Ville’s Afrobeat’s reception ? did he have to bring Africa into it? was it egotistic? how about J.cole’s apology? do you think he was a coward for doing that on Dream Ville stage?
